Captain Book's Mission

“Getting books, they can keep into the hands and homes of children who need them in ways that will inspire them to read”, is and has been the mission of the Captain Book Literacy Program since its inception in 2000.

Based on a study from Science Direct, Captain Book believes that:

1. Kids with books in the home get three years more schooling than children from bookless homes
2. Kids with books in the home become better citizens
3. Kids raised with books in the home get better paid jobs and
4. Kids raised with books in the home understand the difference of good and bad

To that end, since the year 2000, the crew of Captain Book Literacy’s all-volunteer reading pirates have put books (to keep as their own), in more than 200,000 San Diego County children's hands and homes.

To further inspire children to read, the crew also visits classrooms, libraries and attends public events to read and tell stories, sing songs, and perform magic tricks.

In a thank you letter to Captain Book, eight-year-old Mason said it best:

“I like to read. It is fun because if you read you will learn and get better and if you don’t read you won’t learn then you won’t get better. If you don’t, you won’t know how to read then your will not learn, and you don’t want that.”

$5 buys one book, $100 buys a 20-book library for one child, and $600 buys a pallet (approximately 1500 books).
